In spite of the weather.
It was another rainy weekend here in paradise which put the start of our fall outdoor clean up on hold until the sunny, dry weather returns. But you don’t hear me complaining now, do you? *wink* In actual fact, it was a perfect weekend to stay indoors to put the finishing touches on my Civil War nine patch quilt.

I received a phone call on Thursday evening to say that my quilt was ready to be picked up.
My original plan was to send my quilt to Mary at Quilt Hollow but plans had to change because the cost of return shipping from Nova Scotia to North Carolina was astronomical. The gals from my guild recommended Donna, a local gal, who is a professional longarm quilter. Thanks for the wonderful job, Donna!
The colors of the quilt are much warmer than they appear and the photos don’t do the quilt justice because today is another day without sunshine.
I had initially planned to do a scallop or wave border but when Mr. Painted Quilt saw it, he asked me to leave it just as it is. He hardly ever voices or offers an opinion on anything that I make but this quilt really caught his eye and I couldn’t find it in my heart to override his wishes. So I went with a straight border and I’m not unhappy with the way it looks now that it’s finished.
I’ve always wanted to make a scrappy nine patch quilt and this one is even more special because each block is made by someone different who took part in the same Civil War nine patch swap that I did. Thanks again for hosting, Julie!
To take the photographs, I just laid the quilt down on our bed over our everyday quilt. When I flipped up a corner in order to show you the backing, this lump appeared. Any guesses as to what who it is?
Frankie, of course!
And just this morning I made and sewed on the label. The finished quilt measures 91” x 81”.
Now I can officially call it a FINISH!

It turned out wonderfully! Too bad about the shipping. I think NS is closer to the Carolinas than California is so you would think they could figure out a way to make it cheaper!

Fantastic finish. I think you made the right decision with the straight border on this one. I often get that very strange lump in my bed, too! Especially as the weather is turning cooler. Sometimes it's even a double lump.

Your quilt is awesome.....makes me want to start a 9 patch quilt.... also, great job from your local quilter. I am from Ontario but live in the USA now. My fear of shipping from Canada to the USA or from the USA to Canada is that it would get lost....it's happened twice to me with 'important' mail from the Tresurary Dept and the other from a bank.....they never arrived..... makes for big headaches.....I just don't have any confidence with the USPS. It's good you found someone local.

Oh I do love a nine-patch and that really did turn out gorgeous. I hate to say it, but Mr. Painted Quilt was right - keeping the border straight retained the simplicity (and dare I say masculinity) of the project. It's SO beautiful! That's a finish that's gotta feel good. Congratulations.

A wonderful job, Kaaren. I loved this quilt the first time I saw it. Now that it is quilted, it looks fabulous. And I think your husband was right about the borders. Even Frankie is going to enjoy it.

Kaaren I think your hubby was right ... the straight edge looks fabulous :o). I love the quilting too, it really looks terrific - even with the Frankie lump underneath lol. What is it with cats and quilts?? Mine can't resist one either - especially a new one ;o)!!

Oh Kaaren, it turned out so beautiful! I think I even see a cool "Maverick" block in there! We have one of those lumps, too, and her name is Sophie! You can always tell when the weather is about to turn colder - the lump appears under the bedclothes - lol!

A perfectly lovely finish it is! Your border treatment is very appropriate for a Civil War era quilt too. It looks warm and welcoming and that is what a quilt on the bed should be.

It is just beautiful, Kaaren. I love the good old nine patch. My mom is 91 years old and still does baby quilts with little two and one half inch nine patch squares. Great job of quilting too. I will send a photo of my Raggedy and Friends soon, it will be at the quilters this month. Beth in northern Alberta.
