Life is good!

We left home at 8 this morning and returned 10 hours, 250 miles and 2 doctors appointments later.  After meeting with the chief medical oncologist at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax this afternoon, here’s my latest news.

Sunflowers 1[4]

The results of the PET scan that I had a couple of weeks ago discovered a cancerous ‘mass’ that has deposited itself in one of my lymph nodes and has to be removed.  That’s the bad news.  The good news is that because the scan could still not determine the primary source of the cancer, I will not have to undergo either radiation or chemotherapy at this time.

The way it was explained to me is that cancer does not develop in the lymph nodes but ‘travels’ and settles there from a primary source located somewhere else in the body.   Consequently, they cannot treat my cancer in the traditional way because they don’t know the origin.  Because my case is so ‘unusual’, I will be monitored very closely by a team of oncologists and after the surgery will have to undergo additional PET scans every two months to start and then every three months after that to see if the cancer reappears.

sunflower 2

I know that I will be traveling a road filled with uncertainty each time that I must have another PET scan, but I feel extremely confident with the decision made by the oncology team to go this route.  I also know that this gift would never have been given to me had it not been for all your positive thoughts and prayers.  You have no idea how grateful I am to each and every one of you.  Thank you all from the very bottom of my heart.

Life is good!

sunflower 1

My ‘baby’ brother  and his Jack Russell terrier arrived last Monday and left yesterday.  I had not seen them since last November, just before we moved to Nova Scotia.  We spent a wonderful week together showing him the sights, eating lots of seafood which is plentiful and delicious in our neck of the woods and taking lessons from him on how to use my Blackberry.  I now know how to text!

Here’s Newman enjoying the view from the rocky shoreline on Brier Island, Nova Scotia.

Both Mr. Painted Quilt and I hated to see them go…and so did Frankie and Mac who got along with Newman famously.

Have you noticed all the sunflowers?

Do you know what this Friday is?

It’s the First Friday of the month.  I know it’s been a while but please come back on Friday for another FFF (First Friday Freebie).

And if you guessed that it might be about sunflowers, you guessed right!

I love all your works and today I stopped to read your history.
I'm a cancer surviver, and if I could tell you something, in a bad english, but from the bottom of my heart:

    Don't forget to trust Him.
    Warm hugs.

  17. micI want to offer my support to you as you go through your PET scans. I had cancer 6 years ago and so many CT scans I cant even count. You have such a positive attitude and that is what will see you through this. It did me. When chemo had me too sick to sew I picked up beading. My prayers are with you. BTW my parents are on their way to your neck of the woods with their 5th wheel if they can navigate the flooding. They already got stopped trying to make it through Vermont and ended up back in New York. LOL!

  28. How nice to have a week with your brother and his sidekick, Newman. I hope your upcoming surgery goes smoothly for you. Sounds like you are one for the text books - my hubby would say that I am as well, lol, as no medical concern is without some level of "trickiness". It's good to read about your busy summer, new pets, the girls laying eggs, gardening and exploring your new community. Hope you are comfortably settled in your new home now that the painting and construction is behind you. Keeping all good thoughts for you, Kaaren. :-)

How long before the surgery? Hope it is soon to get it over with.

My hubby has renal cell carcinoma. this diagnosis does not get clean bill of health but after surgery we have had 6 yrs of good life and many scans.

Wishing you many years of scans and clean results.

  113. You're in my thoughts and prayers, Kaaren. My former boss, an attorney who is also a brigadier general in the U.S. Army Reserves, would often say in a cheery tone, "Life is good!" I loved hearing him say that. You are very right that life is good! I anticipate reading positive reports from you very soon. Take care.

  120. Just wanted you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers and have been for quite some time. 'The Painted Quilt' is one of my favorite blogs that I read (honestly here - love the 'FFF's!) and your writings of your house hunting, your move, the renovations and your gifts of sewing and design are so special! Even tho your 'news' was bad/good, it could have been so much worse. Sending a hug because life is indeed good!
