I finished piecing my granny square quilt this morning and I must say that it was one of the more fun quilts that I’ve made in some time. I think that Frankie’s choice of fabrics had a lot to do with it. How can 1930’s feedsack fabrics not bring a smile to one’s face?
Here it is on my design wall bed. Frankie had to do his usual close up inspection before he would give it his paw of approval.
I made a few changes to the design by adding cornerstones to separate the sashing strips and blocks from the same red dotted fabric that I used in the center squares of each block.
More changes will be made by adding prairie points to the perimeter after it’s quilted using the left over squares from the block construction. The binding will be from the same red polka dot fabric.
Frankie-isms…
- Yep…works fine for relaxing...very comfortable.
- Told ya the fabrics would work well with this design.
I even managed to tidy up my studio when I was done…
but will leave the dusting for another day…cough, cough!
Then Mr. Painted Quilt, Mac and I spent about two hours outside raking leaves and doing other spring chores.
It’s going to be an early night! *yawn*
*A special thank you to Blue Elephant Stitches for providing the inspiration and tutorial to make the Granny Square blocks.
You were fast and it is a beauty. I can imagine you must be wiped out considering you were just on that shopping adventure, quilting that big top, and yard work!! Busy girl for sure!! Do you think you would whip one up in civil war now? I saw one earlier (can't recall at moment) it was cw granny squares with alternating plain blocks. I'm also guessing smaller blocks ...perhaps using 1.5 "squares? There were more blocks in the top is why I think they were smaller. It was to die for! I just know you would LOVE it. Get some shut eye soon...tomorrow is another fun filled day.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. I fully understand that Frankie loves it.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous quilt! Love the colour combinations!
ReplyDeleteHi Kaaren
ReplyDeleteLove the look of your quilt top.The cornerstones really set everything out. Hope you didn't overdue it with the raking. Have a nice rest for the rest of the day.
Dianne

ReplyDeleteVery nice, I have 5 blocks completed and the fab cut for the rest...I plan on just using all white for the sashing, thinking of something diff for the 6" border....mmmmmmmm.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt project...and Frankie is quite the stitch inspector... Glad to see you are once again in your "element" and dust bunnies can always wait until next time! -Rosemary
ReplyDeleteI love the way you did the cornerstones. Perhaps you'll name it Frankie's Quilt or "I did it my way"???
ReplyDeleteIt is lovely! Congrats on a super fast top!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful quilt. Love Frankie. We have a Maine Coon cat and every quilt that I make has to have a "cat scan" before it can leave the house. I was wondering what the crank machine is by your ironing board. I can't tell from the pic. Love the sewing room.
ReplyDeleteFrankie indeed has good taste; your granny square quilt is beyond charming. I look forward to seeing it with prairie points. (Currently resisting rushing to sewing room to make a version of my own!)
ReplyDeleteAre you sure you have to dust in a quilt studio/workshop? I thought that's why we opened the windows, to let the dust bunnies out (along with Peter Rabbit!)
ReplyDeleteSo glad you're feeling up to raking the leaves.
I just love that quilt. I will have to put this fun and beautiful design on my list of projects.
ReplyDeletePoor Frankie, work, work, work. It must be exhausting for him. I love the place where you board him. It looks lovely and the rates are so reasonable. Of course, he deserves only the best.
ReplyDeleteThe blocks look great. I love the red polka dot centers.
Hi Kaaren,
ReplyDeleteI really like that red pop in the middle of the blocks. I may have to copy-cat you (if Frankie OK's it).
