Serendipitous Sunday

There's a little bit of everything going on today and it's not even noon yet!

I did a little bit of housework, a couple of loads of laundry and then decided to make Mr. Painted Quilt's favorite oatmeal cookies.

My Mom used to make these for him every time we'd go over to visit.  They're very easy to make and the recipe yields 60 decent-sized cookies.

Here's the recipe if you'd like to make some.

Oatmeal Cookies

1/2 C raisins
3/4 C boiling water
3/4 C sugar
1 C margarine at room temperature
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
2 C all purpose flour
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
2 C rolled oats
1/2 C chopped nuts

Combine raisins and boiling water and set aside to cool to room temperature.

Cream together sugar and margarine at medium speed until light and fluffy.

Add egg and vanilla to creamed mixture and mix at low speed for 1 minute.

Stir together flour, cinnamon, baking powder and soda to blend well.

Add oats and nuts to creamed mixture along with flour mixture, raisins and liquid in which raisins were soaked.  Mix at medium speed until flour is moistened.

Drop by 1 1/2 tablespoonfuls onto parchment paper-lined cookie sheets.

Bake at 350F for 10 - 12 minutes or until done.  Remove to wire rack to cool to room temperature.

Enjoy!

I'm in my "between projects mode" and rather than start on something new just yet, I've decided to go through my scraps and continue to iron and cut the pieces that are large enough into 1 1/2" and 2 1/2" strips.

I think I've managed to cut over 100 strips of different lengths so far and my scrap bins have shrunk considerably.

I've always wanted to make a scrappy churn dash quilt and these strips will sure come in handy when I decide to take the plunge...and most of the cutting will be done already!

While in this "between projects mode", I reorganized some of the fabric stash on one of my shelves to accommodate the new fabrics that I purchased last week.

I also cut some strips from the new fabric as well to add to the mix.

And while I'm not stripping, I'm working on my Grandmother's Flower Garden.

My goal is to have it finished by the end of this year...or sooner!

Only three more rows to go.  All the hexie flowers are made, it's just a matter of buckling down and getting 'r done!

And the boys?

The picture says it all...

Think I'll make myself a cup of tea and have a couple of cookies.  Care to join me?

  1. You do keep busy, lots of beautiful projects.
I make oatmeal cookies but I make mine flat and add grated apple to sweeten them, since I don't use sugar.

  10. Love the boys in the chair, they always make me smile. Thanks for the cookie recipe and the invite, oatmeal is one of my husband's favourites as well. I've also started cutting my scraps into strips. Just 1 1/2-inch strips for now, as I want to make a Log Cabin pattern that I got from Geoff's Mom Pattern Co. What ever is left over, I'll cut into 1 1/2-inch squares for nine patches. Your hexi quilt is looking better and better.

  24. A scrappy churn dash with those gorgeous scraps--be still my heart! One of my favorites!
Oh, your wonderful Grandmother's Flower Garden puts me to shame. I started one 15 years ago and would work on it as I waited for kids at piano lessons, sports practices, orthodontist appts., etc. When that phase of life was over, so was progress on that quilt. : (
    This a beauty! Great job!

  25. Yum! If we lived closer we could swap with the chocolate chip cookies I made today ;>) You're really inspiring me to start cutting strips, Kaaren! Do you have a plan in mind for them? Looks like Frankie is feeling better - do you think he's trying to crowd Ollie out of the chair (wink)!
    Cheers!

  31. Back in the 90's when my daughter played trumpet in the Los Altos High School Band (Hacienda Heights, CA), I would bake 23 dozen oatmeal cookies for Thursday night practice/rehearsals . . . I did it every other Thursday for her section for 4 years - there were 23 trumpeters, only 3 were girls . . . I can say proudly that I was a favorite with them!

  35. Oatmeal-raisin cookies are my absolute favorite .... right out of the oven! I have so many scraps. I always wanted to do a scrappy log cabin. Maybe I could find some time to cut strips on a cold rainy day .... like tomorrow.

Don't eat all the cookies at once!

  42. Just popping in for a quick hello and saw your oatmeal cookie recipe. There are so many variations of a favourite in our house too. I have lots of catching up to do on my blog reading but was happy to see your wonderful companions curled up. Hope you don't get too much more snow with this storm hitting us in Ontario today. I think we might get mostly water, much easier to shovel, lol.
