It’s a wrap!

As of about three hours ago, the postage stamp WIP is now a flimsy!  Woo hoo!

DSCN0413

I’m absolutely thrilled with the way it turned out.  Man oh man, I thought the piecing would never end but it was worth every hour spent on it.   It’s what I call my six bobbin quilt because that’s how many bobbins it took to complete the top.

Next step?  Call Donna to ask when I can drop it off so that she can work her longarm magic on it.

border2longer_jpg_w560h78

The quilt top measures 60” x 80”, a perfect size for the layered look which I just love as you can see here in the guest bedroom.

DSCN0424

Recognize the quilt?

DSCN0425

It’s one of the two cuddle quilts from Allie and her world-wide posse which you can read about here, just in case you missed it.

border2longer_jpg_w560h78

As soon as I finished piecing the quilt, the clean up of my studio began.  It went from this…

to this…

in about an hour.

DSCN0419

And while I was tidying up, I hung a few more mini quilts on the walls.

DSCN0420

Whew!  Everything is clean, neat and tidy once again…until I start on my next project which I’m hoping will be very soon.

DSCN0423

I had some veggies left over from our shopping expedition to the Wolfville farmer’s market last Saturday and decided to use them up for dinner tonight.

A favorite of ours is my ‘Harvest Veggie Casserole’ and this is what it looks like before adding…

the bread crumb topping.

Here it is 40 minutes later, piping hot right out of the oven.

Mr. Painted Quilt has an early meeting tonight so we’ll be eating soon.

Here’s the recipe, just in case you your veggies as much as we do.

Harvest Veggie Casserole

3-4 C diced rutabaga  (fancy name for turnip)

2 C diced carrots

3-4 C diced potatoes

2-3 C squash  (I used butternut)

1 large onion, chopped

5 tbsp butter

3 tbsp flour

1/4 tsp pepper

1/4 tsp salt

1 1/2 C milk

1 C grated cheddar cheese

1 C bread crumbs

Butter a 3 quart casserole or baking dish.

Place the diced rutabaga, carrots and squash in a large saucepan.  Cover with water.  Bring to a boil then cover, reduce heat to low and simmer for about 20 minutes.

Add diced potatoes and onion to the veggies, adding more water if needed to cover.  Simmer covered for 15-20 minutes or until veggies are tender.

Drain and allow veggies to cool slightly.

In a saucepan and over medium heat, melt 4 tbsp butter.  Add the flour and stir until well blended.  Stir in salt and pepper then gradually stir in the milk.  Cook stirring constantly until thickened.  Add cheese and stir until melted.

Combine sauce with the veggies and stir gently.  Turn into the prepared baking dish.

Melt 1 tbsp butter and toss with the breadcrumbs.  Sprinkle over the veggies.  Bake uncovered at 350 F for about 35-40 minutes until brown and bubbly.

We’re having ours with fresh pork sausage links.  Yummo!

Six bobbins?!? That's a lot of stitches, my friend. It's beautiful. I'm not sure I have enought patience to stick with one project that long. Your veggie casserole looks very tasty - I'm putting it in the menu rotation for next week. Thanks for sharing th recipe. And since you're between projects, would you mind coming down to clean, organize, decorate, and 'cutify' my sewing room?

I think I have commented on your Hoosier cabinet previously but I just have to again. It looks so very good! What kind of treasures are hidden in it?
I know it feels good to get all those squares sewn into a quilt top and it will look good laying on a bed. I like the look of a quilt folded on the end of a bed. Or even a couple of quilts.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, that quilt is absolutely fabulous. It may have taken some time to piece it all together, but you certainly have something to be very proud of. And what a cute sewing room you have. I always have to clean up my room before I start a new project. Thanks for another great recipe. It's rather cool here today and windy, so a hearty casserole will be just right.

Wow Kaaren that is a LOT of bobbins, lol! The quilt looks fabulous! I've never had the patience to make one. I can't wait to see it quilted! Hey, I recognize that quilt, lol. I too love the layered look - can there ever be too many quilts? I think NOT.

Your studio is too darling. I have to clean up after every project too, I can't seem to start a new one until everything's in place. Even if I just finish and start making a new mess, lol!

Thanks for the recipe, oh it looks so yummy, perfect for a cold autumn day!

Quilt pic time is fun isn't it because then you get to sit back and soak in the hard work you DID!!! And eat some of that delicious looking veggie dish--snatching the recipe up! Love rutabaga and squash and my 3 1/2 yr old might eat it too with the sauce and bread crumbs disguising the veggies. He loves carrots and peas though;)

Your postage stamp project turned out so well...looking forward to seeing it quilted - so many possibilities.

Anyone would be comfortable in your guest room...it is so inviting and if you are a quilter, it would be heavenly.

Ohh, all those little bitty pieces look so good. Not sure I could do that. Bud I need to. I'm Mrs. Gotscraps here.

Your studio is so neat and cozy. Decorated so yummy.

Speaking of yummy... Today was so damp and drear, I thought it would be a perfect day for your Harvest Casserole. I didn't have rutabaga or squash, but I did have pumpkin (We had a bumper crop.) and pumpkin is just an overgrown squash anyway. So carrots/onions/potatoes/pumpkin chunks. The casserole was So Good! DH raved about it. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Catching up from being out of town... There's alot of envy involved in that sewing room. The accuracy in stitching that new quilt of yours is beautiful. Great job.
