Not a pleasant thought I know but it has crossed my mind.
Of course I'd make sure that Frankie and Ollie were safe and then...
I'd snatch up my sewing kit and high tail it outta here!
I can see you all shaking your heads and saying,
"Your sewing kit? You've got to be kidding!"
But my sewing kit is a veritable treasure chest. Really!
It was a purchase I made about 5 or 6 years ago at Jo-Ann's and if my memory serves me correctly, with the 40% off coupon, I believe I paid about $8 for it.
It's not very big, about 7" x 10" x 5". There was a larger size as well and I remember thinking at the time that I'd have trouble finding enough stuff to fill the smaller one, so that's the one that came home with me.
To this day, it suits my needs perfectly and has become my second right hand.
There's an upper part...
into which I've crammed every possible tool that one could possibly need for stitching or sewing including...
Permanent markers, sketching pencils, Frixon pens, chalk pencils, needles, glue stick, tape measure, rulers, thimbles, straight pins, eraser, seam ripper, 3 pairs of scissors, a Tide stick (which removes blood from fabric when I prick my finger stitching), a thread catcher...even an extra pair of glasses...plus a host of other things too numerous to mention.
And that's only the top tier!
The lower compartment is comprised of several zippered "pages".
There's almost an entire notions section that you'd find in most shops stored in this kit.
And it doesn't stop there.
Finally, the bottom layer...
It's the first thing I pack up whenever I go stitching or sewing with my friends.
Many times I've heard, "Does anyone have a ______?" Usually the reply is, "Ask Kaaren. She has everything you can possibly need in that kit of hers."
See what I mean? Wouldn't you reach for it as well? After all, the only thing that's missing is the kitchen sink! Hmmmmmm...maybe I should have bought the bigger size.
Happy stitching!
That's a pretty nifty kit. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWhat a treasure ! I can see why it is so valuable to you ;) And of course, it doesn't hurt that it was bought at a great price !

We have a male friend who used to wear a zippered black fanny pack when he left home. It was much like a medicine cabinet in contents. But he also had a small camera and assortment of other things. Seemed like he always had what someone needed. Now he carries a black tote bag instead. Still the previous items but now two cameras and a host of other items. He is the most prepared person I know.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you ought to keep some money tucked in the bottom of your kit so that when there is a fire, you have some money to tide you over for food, etc.
that is a pretty nifty sewing kit. Love all the comparments. And of course you can't forget those sweet babies :)
ReplyDeleteNeat sewing kit!
ReplyDeleteIt is good to have an emergency pack by the exit. If not, then I would not stop to find one. In case of fire, even saving pets can cost a life. I'd save people, and maybe try for pets. The operative word in a fire is Out! As in run or crawl out the nearest exit, window or door.
That's an awesome kit! Very organized and great use of space!
ReplyDeleteI can see why your Kit is the third thing you would grab in case of a fire. it's fabulous, a real Pandora's Box......
ReplyDeleteYou must have been a girl scout because you are definitely living by the "be prepared" motto. I love your kit and what a great job of organizing you have done. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant!!! I love that the sewing kit is made of fabric. That way it won't take up too much space. The one I have is wooden and rather heavy. Must check out JoAnn's and other places for a new one. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a logical grab to me. It was the photos that I grabbed when we actually had to do it for a brushfire. I never thought of my sewing supplies.
ReplyDeleteThat's a beautiful kit. But shouldn't you add a chocolate bar, just in case?
ReplyDeleteYes there should be some chocolate for sure :) I like the kit, If I had one it would probably be too heavy to "grab" and run. LOL thanks :)
ReplyDeleteOkay, I was way off on what I thought this post would be about. From the title and thumbnail photo I thought it would be something about how the boys curl up together in front of the stove "in case" there is a fire.
ReplyDeleteAt a recent retreat I met a woman who had a kit like this. Yours is so like hers I can hear the Twilight Zone music in the background. You are the kind of prepared gal it is always nice to know and have along. : )
Hi Kaaren, I love your story. I know exactly what you mean. My problem is that I have two or three of my favorite bags I would have to take. Can never have enough of them or enough room. Hugs.
ReplyDeleteYour sewing kit is well supplied so maybe I would grab that too :-)
ReplyDeleteI can see why you'd grab it:). I would too. You have it. So organized! It does give you something to think about for sure.
ReplyDeleteMan, we are getting quite a downpour . Guess it will bring out the flowers....if not blow them away!
Stay dry!
Hugs Marg
One of my students just had a fire in the thatch of her cottage. Didn't manage to save her fabric stash, but the fireman did hand her heavy duty sewing machine to a neighbour who was helping to save items. When she was presented with her machine she was overjoyed. We have had a collection in class for her, and we have an amazing amount of fabric and haberdashery donated. She is going to be in a rented house until her cottage is rebuilt. But she does have her life, it could have been so different, she was in the cottage when the fire broke out. You can rebuild your fabric stash but not your life
ReplyDeleteYou gave me a good idea to add this to our 72-hour kits! Who knows if I'll be stuck somewhere with nothing to do but worry. Sewing relaxes me and someone just may need a pair of scissors, etc! Love your kit!
ReplyDeleteThat's really neat!
ReplyDeleteMy husband said if we had a fire, to grab my embroidery machine because it's the most expensive thing in our house.
I sort of agree, but I'd probably not make it out because I'd would try to grab everything that goes with it. LOL
That's one of the niftiest kits I have seen and I would grab it myself. Now, who get's Ollie and who gets Frankie. Three thinks and two hands. Being a woman, I'm sure you could get all three and save Mr. P. at the same time. What an amazing woman ha, ha. Just having a good giggle but I really love that bag. A sewer' s dream. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous sewing kit. Is there a brand on the bag? I am in Australia and would love to try and track one down
ReplyDeleteHi Karen,
ReplyDeleteThanks for showing us your sewing kit! I enjoy seeing what other quilters keep in their kits and I'm sure a lot of your other readers do to. It's fun to then compare with our own sewing kits. I have two of them. A very small drawstring bag that holds anything related to my current hand-sewing project and a stack of snap and store boxes that hold my machine sewing supplies like presser feet, bobbins, stiletto, etc. and general sewing notions like my Frixion pens and machine needles.

What a wonderful kit ~ I think I would grab it too!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea to put a tide stick in there ~ I'm always poking my finger!!!
Thanks for sharing!

Que preciosas fotos!! yo tambiƩn tengo un westy ;.)) besos
ReplyDeleteI love that kit of yours! I'm one of those that has benefited from all the goodies to be found in it! Must find something similar for myself! I love seeing your rifle through it looking for something in particular!
ReplyDeleteHmmm, love this kit. although I have never seen a sewing kit with all the zippered compartments. This will have to go on my look for list. If anyone finds one on line please forward me a link. thanks for sharing! mburnette912@bellsouth.net
ReplyDeleteThat is pretty nifty, a place for everything and everything in it's place. However, no chocolate compartment!
ReplyDeleteGreat kit...cute kids!
ReplyDeleteThat is cute!! I ended up getting a yazzii scrapbook binder. it is about 18x18 ma be little bigger with all kinds of pockets and sections. It will even fit some fabric and my round cutting mat.
ReplyDeleteHi Karen, your kit is so well organized. I'm just stopping by to say how delightful your blog is. Thanks so much for sharing. I have recently found your blog and am now following you, and will visit often. Please stop by my blog and perhaps you would like to follow me also. Have a wonderful day and a Happy Easter. Hugs, Chris

Actually, your question has been one I've thought of more than a few times. I don't have a sewing kit, so that was not something on my list. Thanks for sharing your great sewing kit!
ReplyDeleteFunny that you should ask that question....last year we were in the middle of the Rim Fire in California.....we were on advisory evacuation.......which means when they knock on your door you grab what is by your door and leave....we were lucky our family was able to come up and get my antiques out and then we packed as much as I could in trash bags and loaded our cars with everything I could get in.....not any of my stash, but I packe all my quilts that I have made....it all worked out ok our house did not burn, but we lived this way all of August and some of September.....after it was all over I went through all my stash and took pictures and listed it all on our computer......
ReplyDeleteI have the exact same kit. I was in JA looking for a gift for my secret sister when I spotted them. I picked one up for her, but the price was a little high. When it rang up, it must have been on sale, so I got one for myself, too! My only regret is that they had a larger size, and I wish I would have gotten that instead. I have only seen them that one time.
