Wrong! It's only the 20th and yes, I'm cooking our turkey today.
We bought the Butterball turkey(s) just before Thanksgiving because they they were on special...buy one, get one free. Well Thanksgiving came and went and I didn't cook a turkey because we were invited out which meant we had two birds in the freezer.
Then just the other day Mr. Painted quilt asked if we could have ham for Christmas dinner this year, just for a change. So I ordered a ham from our local country store which has the most delicious meats and we'll pick it up tomorrow. This is why one of the turkeys is in the oven at this very moment.
We'll have it for dinner tonight and then I'll slice up the rest and will make turkey pot pies, turkey stew and turkey soup to freeze and have throughout the cold winter months. There will be lots left over so if you're in the neighborhood, be sure to stop in!
Thank goodness for great neighbors with tractors!
We're finally dug out from over a foot of snow that fell on Wednesday and now rain is in the forecast for the next couple of days. Probably a lot of what fell will be washed away.
But here's what it looks like this morning. Can you see the ocean in the distance? That's the Annapolis Basin, part of the Bay of Fundy.
Out the "back forty"...
I've been promising to show you pictures of my Safe Harbor II. It's a big quilt measuring 98" x 92" so it was difficult to take decent photos. It fits perfectly on a queen size bed with a generous drop.
I thought this quote by JFK was perfect to grace the lower border.
This next photo shows the final three outside borders. Can you make out Alice's gorgeous quilting?
This final photo shows the cornerstone, outside piano key border and the backing fabric.
I NEVER make two of anything but when Mr. Painted Quilt suggested that I make a second one in blues, I couldn't say no. I'm really happy that I did and now I can't decide which is my favorite!
Here's the original Safe Harbor in shades of red.
If you'd like to purchase a copy of the pattern, they are still for sale in my Etsy shop which you can link to HERE.
Now I gotta go baste the turkey!
Happy stitching!
Ohhh I love them BOTH!! Lucky me won the pattern in one of your give aways!! Thanks for the choice of TWO colour ways...eeny...meany...

Wow! Another beautiful quilt!!! Absolutely gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteTurkey sounds delicious! Don't forget to share with Frankie and Ollie! ;-)
Oh, thanks for reminding me to get a turkey out of the freezer to start thawing (we also have two in there)!
ReplyDeleteI am in love with that blue version. So calming and beautiful! I do love red, but that blue one--Wow!!
Merry Christmas, Kaaren!
Aw, that poor turkey, all naked for the whole world to see, I even think he's blushing LOL.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous quilts, both of them.
Have a great Christmas
Dutch greetings
Kaaren.... sure wish I was closer. Turkey in the oven sounds real good to me, LOL ! I really like the red version; But OH MY !!!!!!!!! That blue one is Gorgeous!!!!!! Yes , that would be my choice.
ReplyDeleteYou sure did get a pile of snow.
Your weather is much the same as ours... and now it is raining & it will be a mess again. At least with snow it is clean :)
Blue or red they are both amazing!! Merry Christmas!!
ReplyDeleteThe quilt is beautiful, both in red or blue. Glad you're dug out of the snow. We have had snow overnight, about two inches, but it's starting to rain so I'll get to the grocery store after all. People tend to stay home when it snows here on the west coast, no matter how little there is. Enjoy your turkey dinner tonight, my mouth is watering, and enjoy your win from Sentimental Quilter.
ReplyDeleteBoth are wonderful and it just amazes me how different color choices makes each quilt look so alike, yet different.
ReplyDeleteIf I were up in your parts, I would be sure to stop by.
Merry Christmas Kaaren.
I love turkey, especially the leftovers. I like your game plan for the bird. I hope you have a kit of freezer space.
ReplyDeleteAnother Safe Harbour beauty, I like how you did the offset flying geese in the border. Lovely quilting job.
Here on the west coast the snow is falling, I got up twice during the night to peek out and take a few pictures. Unfortunately our weatherman says we will probably have a green Christmas, but will enjoy the snow while it is here.
mmm....turkey sandwiches! :)
ReplyDeleteI fell in love with Safe Harbor 1 and now I am in doubly (?) love with Safe Harbor 2!
ReplyDeleteThe turkey looks delish...so happy you are able to get out and can pick up your ham tomorrow.
Enjoy!
It is simply beautiful in both colorways, and the quilting just makes it shine! I need to order the pattern and make one for myself! Have a wonderful holiday.
ReplyDeleteHola amiga!
ReplyDeleteFeliz Navidad y un Próspero Año Nuevo 2014.
Un fuerte abrazo desde Venezuela!
Very Impressive! Such lovely hand work and piecing!
ReplyDeleteHappy turkey eating!
Wish I could stop by, but Las Vegas, NV is a little ways away! Everything you cook always looks SO delicious, too! Love the quilt, too! Hope you have a Merry Christmas, Kaaren!
ReplyDeleteYour quilts are beautiful!!!! and I love your view of the water.
ReplyDeleteBoth quilts are beautiful Kaaren. If I must choose, I would go for the blue. I hope to get down to making this quilt using the pattern I won. You are my inspiration. I love your style.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the Turkey Everything. Ham sounds like a good idea for Christmas. xx
What a beautiful quilt!!! just love the blue one, reminds me of the ocean. My dad grew up near the ocean and moved away when he was in his 20's, even at 85 when we would go back to visit he said we were going home.

While I have never had the good fortune to see the Bay of Fundy, I feel as if I know it from the songs of one of my favorite folk artists - Gordon Bok. Do you know his wonderful songs of the sea? The quilt is gorgeous and the quote from JFK could not be more appropriate, especially as we recently experienced the 50th anniversary of his passing. How I remember that day, exactly where I was and what I was doing. You do the same with the turkey as I do, cook it, slice all the meat off to freeze for other purposes, then make soup. How I love turkey vegetable soup (and I sometimes add barley. I definitely want your quilt pattern but things are tight from the recent hospital stay. I pray you will still have a copy available next month when things have to be better! Merry Christmas and a New Year filled with good health and many blessings. How I love your little corner of the world.
ReplyDeleteThe turkey looks yummy and I am sure it is delicious also. The newest Safe Harbour quilt is stunning and the quote from JFK is perfect. What a nice extra touch to your newest masterpiece. I have the pattern and look forward to doing it some day in the near future. Thanks Karen, your web site is wonderful and I always look forward to see what is happening at The Painted Quilt. All my best wishes to you and Mr. Painted Quilt. May the Christmas and New Year season bring you peace , joy and love.
ReplyDeleteOh, they are both so beautiful! I can't decide which I like better either.
ReplyDeleteI always roast an extra turkey to freeze for the winter months. Makes it so easy to use.
It looks like you have the best of both worlds where you live - the ocean on one side and the woods on the other. A freezer full of comfort foods sounds wonderful! I love easy homemade dinners!
ReplyDeleteThey both look amazing...I'm kind of really loving the blue. Turkey looks delicious and there's nothing better than leftovers!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt and quilting! Hugs,
ReplyDeleteyour quilt is a real beauty. Mouth watering at the turkey in the oven, enjoy your ham on 25th, we are having our turkey on 28th.
ReplyDeleteNo snow here we are enjoying quite a mild winter so far
Magnificent...both of them. Hard to just pick one!
ReplyDeleteSafe Harbor is beautiful in Blue! I love them both, but that blue is wonderful. And the quote by JFK makes it more special. We live in Michigan and find ourselves drawn to photograph light houses around the lakes. The water is such a source of fascination for us!
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoy your turkey, we are going to cook ours tomorrow, we will be in and out later in the week. So decided to go ahead with it like you. Can not get over how beautiful those quilts of yours are! Just love them both, and the backing fabric is lovely. I hope you have a Wonderful Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteYour quilts are so pretty. I couldn't choose between them.
ReplyDeleteExtra turkey meat in the freezer is a real bonus. And turkey and ham together are a treat.
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas!

ReplyDeleteBravo on your win from A Sentimental Quilter, of the Jo Morton damasks. I am sure you will make something wonderful from them.
ReplyDeleteHola, despues de ver y disfrutar tanto de tus trabajos vengo a desearte Feliz Navidad.
ReplyDeleteI'd say turkey is good any old time, Kaaren, and even more so with such a great bargain! Wow - that's a mountain of snow and sooo pretty! I think I'd just stay inside and stitch away!
ReplyDeleteCheers!
Both quilts are beautiful... I'm partial to the blue!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy that Christmas ham... sounds delicious!
