We left home at 8 this morning and returned 10 hours, 250 miles and 2 doctors appointments later. After meeting with the chief medical oncologist at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax this afternoon, here’s my latest news.
The results of the PET scan that I had a couple of weeks ago discovered a cancerous ‘mass’ that has deposited itself in one of my lymph nodes and has to be removed. That’s the bad news. The good news is that because the scan could still not determine the primary source of the cancer, I will not have to undergo either radiation or chemotherapy at this time.
The way it was explained to me is that cancer does not develop in the lymph nodes but ‘travels’ and settles there from a primary source located somewhere else in the body. Consequently, they cannot treat my cancer in the traditional way because they don’t know the origin. Because my case is so ‘unusual’, I will be monitored very closely by a team of oncologists and after the surgery will have to undergo additional PET scans every two months to start and then every three months after that to see if the cancer reappears.
I know that I will be traveling a road filled with uncertainty each time that I must have another PET scan, but I feel extremely confident with the decision made by the oncology team to go this route. I also know that this gift would never have been given to me had it not been for all your positive thoughts and prayers. You have no idea how grateful I am to each and every one of you. Thank you all from the very bottom of my heart.
Life is good!
My ‘baby’ brother and his Jack Russell terrier arrived last Monday and left yesterday. I had not seen them since last November, just before we moved to Nova Scotia. We spent a wonderful week together showing him the sights, eating lots of seafood which is plentiful and delicious in our neck of the woods and taking lessons from him on how to use my Blackberry. I now know how to text!
Here’s Newman enjoying the view from the rocky shoreline on Brier Island, Nova Scotia.
Both Mr. Painted Quilt and I hated to see them go…and so did Frankie and Mac who got along with Newman famously.
Have you noticed all the sunflowers?
Do you know what this Friday is?
It’s the First Friday of the month. I know it’s been a while but please come back on Friday for another FFF (First Friday Freebie).
And if you guessed that it might be about sunflowers, you guessed right!

Hi!
I love all your works and today I stopped to read your history.
I'm a cancer surviver, and if I could tell you something, in a bad english, but from the bottom of my heart:
"If we woke up this morning is because our LORD have something special for us".
Don't forget to trust Him.

I am so glad you got news you can live with even if it will be scarry. I can't wait for you FFF I have missed your designs and have really not stitch any since your last one. Hope surgery goes well for you and my prayers are being sent your way.
Congrats on your news. Another
positive step forward in life.
Wonderful news that you are back to FFF. It is great news too. I look forward to the treat.

Glad you have news. Still keeping a lot of positive thoughts.Keep your chin up and you keep the positive thoughts as well. That is what helped me. There are still a lot of fun things to do.
Yeay after all the mayhem of Irene, some good news. I am so pleased. We will all continue to send positive thoughts for every pet scan and scare those things away.
Looking forward to Friday
How wonderful it must be to finally have some kind of an answer! And now you can move forward in dealing with all this. I'm looking forward to your FFF! I was just stitching on one of your other designs earlier today! :0)
micI want to offer my support to you as you go through your PET scans. I had cancer 6 years ago and so many CT scans I cant even count. You have such a positive attitude and that is what will see you through this. It did me. When chemo had me too sick to sew I picked up beading. My prayers are with you. BTW my parents are on their way to your neck of the woods with their 5th wheel if they can navigate the flooding. They already got stopped trying to make it through Vermont and ended up back in New York. LOL!
Oh Kaaren, it's good news. Even though they haven't found the source, it does sound positive. How nice to have your brother and his cute little dog come for a visit. I love Sunflowers, I'll be back on Friday and thanks for doing the First Friday Freebie when you have so much on your mind.
Lots more positive thoughts and prayers headed your way! Stay strong, girlfriend. Oh, and I love sunnyflowers!!
Hello Kaaren, So glad to hear that they have finally made a decision on your treatment. You have such a positive attitude and it's obviously working.

Kaaren, it is good to know that you finally can proceed with taking care of your issue. My prayers are still with you. Also good to know that you are feeling well enough to share a FFF with us.

Beth oneoldgoat
How nice to have a week with your brother and his sidekick, Newman. I hope your upcoming surgery goes smoothly for you. Sounds like you are one for the text books - my hubby would say that I am as well, lol, as no medical concern is without some level of "trickiness". It's good to read about your busy summer, new pets, the girls laying eggs, gardening and exploring your new community. Hope you are comfortably settled in your new home now that the painting and construction is behind you. Keeping all good thoughts for you, Kaaren. :-)
I am sending my warm thoughts and best wishes for everything to continue going in a positive direction! I think of you often and will continue you in my prayers! I will be back on Friday--sunflowers are my absolute favorite! Hugs and love...
Being informed is always good Kaaren. I am sending good positive vibes your way but you don't really need them. Your bright bubbly outlook will se you through sweetie. Thinking of you :)

I am so happy you finally have some answers.I am sure it will be a scary event with each PET Scan. You keep your positive feelings along with the rest of us and we will all fight this with you...all the way.

So glad you finally have some answers. Do you know when your surgery will be? Just know that we are all praying for you, and that won't stop anytime soon! I'm excited about the sunflowers...I love them - they are just so happy!
Wonderful news Kaaren. Praying this surgery will be the answer to your cancer and it will not reappear. Praising the Lord for the many prayers that have been sent up in your behalf.
So glad you had some good news and it sounds like you have excellent doctors with a good plan to keep you in good health. You are in my thoughts and have a whole wonderful online community to support you:)
Hi Kaaren!
Thanks for the up-date...glad to hear that the Drs. are on top of things and have a plan. I am so thankful that they have all these wonderful machines to detect cancer in the early stages so that they can zap it in its tracks! Your are so right..Life is VERY good!! Stay positive!
Paulettexo
PS I LOVE sunflowers!! Can't wait till Friday!
I will keep you in my prayers.
So glad to hear the update - sounds very positive and I think it will be a good thing to have those checks done. You can keep on top of this and know exactly where you stand. You are becoming braver and more courageous with each step of this journey - blessings to you!! AND a Freebie Friday - now I know you are feeling better :) Love ya!
Happy to hear at least your making a bit of progress on finding whats up. Sorry to hear the bad part, but happy about the good part. Still thinking of you!
I like the sound of your treatment and hoping that you can have it removed and live cancer free after that. It seems like a less invasive treatment than having to go through chemotherapy, so my prayers that this is a fluke and nothing new will appear.
Debbie
You have a positive attitude and that is part of the battle. I am still wishing you the best outcome possible. I hope there is a quilt shop, antique store, or something to visit when you make the trips to your doctors. Something to cheer you up along the journey (and to add to your stash).
Thank you for letting us know how you're doing. Will keep praying that things will keep going well and the surgery does the job. love the sunflower pitures
Wow what news... All I can say is at least you know now what the problem is, and that it can be somewhat treated. I have Cancer in my family too, Breast and Prostate but they are both still kickin around. Keep your head and spirits up, I will be praying for you.
So amazing and so you to keep focused on the positive Kaaren! And bringing us sunflowers too? Wow.
I am so happy to hear this - and that your wait is over, that's a good thing! I will be praying with each PET scan. Well heck, I pray for you every day anyway, lol.
Newman is darling - so glad you got to spend time with your brother!!
Praying for good results, and that this will be the end of your journey with cancer.
I've been so blessed not having to do chemo or radiation. Of course, with every checkup, there is always a fear, but I have learned so much about really trusting God to watch over me.
Please keep us posted.
Well, I'm glad, glad, glad that you don't have to go through radiation or chemo, and we'll just believe that this is the end of it. That's enough, in Jesus' Name!
Well, the news is kind of mixed but it's a good start to get the lymph tumour removed. Your positive attitude will get you through the tough times. I hope all goes well for you. You have lots of family, friends and blog readers cheering for you!
Atta Girl! keep the bright side shining thru! I know you can do it!

At least you know 'something', and can plan for the next stage without being too overwhelmed! I pray your surgery goes well and that you recover quickly so you can get on with things. Continued prayers and positive thoughts you way Kaaren.
I'm glad to hear the visit with your brother and his little four-legged mate went well and that all the furry ones got on ok!

Glad you got news!
Prayers are still flying your way!
Bless you

Great to hear they have found something to start on. I watch for your posts as I too feel like you are a friend, just from reading your blog. I have the flimsy done of the Raggedy quilt and have decided to send it off to the quilter and get it finished. I will put it on a chair that I see every day and pray for you every time I pass it. Beth from Alberta
I love your positive attitude. Good thoughts and prayers are going your way. Looking forward to Friday.
Will definitely be back on Friday just to make sure that you are doing well.
It is wonderful that your brother was able to come for a visit and it is always so hard to have to say goodbye. I have such mixed emotions about your health issue but trust in the judgement of the experts that this is the best since no source can be found. How odd is that....I knew you were one of a kind and very special. :-) I'll be back on Friday to see what all this talk of Sunflowers is...I just know it will be GOOD!!!
My heart is so full for you right now. The surgery will hopefully be soon, over with and out of the way. I know you will be on edge everytime the calendar shows a need for the PET scan, but now you can most likely take one month at a time, instead of one day at a time. Keep up your happy, positive thoughts and good spirits and we will also be pushing ours towards you. Sunflowers are fantastic.
Judy C in NC
Thankful that you now have the news and you know what you will be facing in the near future. Prayers for comfort for you and wisdom for the doctors.
Oh Kaaren, I'm so happy to hear your news. I've been sending positive thoughts your way. I love all the sunflowers. They are so happy!
I'm glad your consultation went well and that a treatment plan has been decided on. It's so much better to know what is ahead and to plan your strategies and your life for the next little while - good luck and good health!
Keep the faith, it can prove to be amazingly helpful in tough times like these.
So happy to hear that your "bad news" is really good. Sounds like you have a very experienced team of experts looking after you. Perhaps the surgery will give them some insight as to the cause. In any event, you will be in my thoughts and prayers this week. Hope your recovery is fast. I know your positive, upbeat attitude will help you beat this thing.
Woot! Woot! Here's hoping that all of your future PET Scans are clear!

It is so nice to finally have a course of action and one that does not involve the dreadful treatments. Answered prayers!
It is wonderful that you had some cherished time with your brother. I know he enjoyed it as much as you did.
See you Friday!
You are an inspiration and in my thoughts and prayers.......
I'm so happy for you and that you have a plan in place and can move forward. I will continue you to keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Your attitude seems so good. I'm sure you have your down times but I bet there few and far apart.
Hugs - Karen
Dear Kaaren,
I will keep you always in my thoughts and prayers. Thank goodness you now know what steps to take to get well. I'm sending you a really big hug!
Elizabeth
The good news is they can treat what they found and will watch for other things. I told my Dr during one appt that this was quite the journey. He just looked at me and said "but you didn't buy this ticket" It's going to be tiring some days, but it sounds like you are in great hands and have such wonderful support and prayers from all over. Take care.
Thanks for the update. I hope you stay as chipper as you sound right now. Did you get any of the effects from the nasty storm that rode up the east coast? I love those sunflowers! What a blessing of nature you have in your new location.
Hi Kaaren,
So good to hear from you with the positive news. Very glad to hear that you all enjoyed your brother's visit and enjoyed Nova Scotia.
Will look forward to Friday, sure have missed that monthly treat. Will be thinking of you as you start your journey's next phase.
Dianne
Finally some answers and a plan going forward. Your positive attitude is the magic ingredient doctors/medicine can't give and it can't help but make a huge difference. Hope the surgery is quick and the recuperation from it easy!
I know you are relieved to atleast have a course of action, and know what you are facing. Waiting is the worse part. I pray that you have no more recurrances and this is the beginning of your recovery. Linda L. in Texas
Waiting has to be the worst thing - so pleased to hear that you now have some idea for the future & have at least some idea of what might be done.
As much as folks complain about wait times I sure appreciate our universal medicare. All the best!
Well, know you know and hopefully you can get this surgery behind you and have it done with. I will continue to pray for the skill of the doctor's hands and that God removes the source. And sunflowers are so cheerful; I do believe they are my favorite Autumn flower.
So good to see you here again!!
You will certainly still be in our thoughts over the next while, getting through you surgery.
How are the chickens doing??
And I love sunflowers , by the way!
Take care
Your outlook is so amazing. I admire you so much. I know you probably have times where you are mad and cry and want to scream (or maybe not)? I just admire your outlook because I know you have to work at it. I think prayer does help so much. You've helped me put my problems into perspective today.
So glad that you have an answer. So many prayers have traveled with you as you have walked this road and we will continue to be with you. As always you are thinking of all of us by having a FFF. Thank you Kaaren and God be with you as you are waiting for this to be part of your past. Blessings to you and Mr. PQ.
I am so pleased that your news gave you a boost. Cancer is such a horrid disease. I will continue to keep you in my prayers as your progress is monitored. Love and best wishes as you go to have surgery. Looking forward to your sunny FFF.
Hi Kaaren! We just got back from a trip and I came over here first thing to see how it goes! I'm glad to find that there has been some intermediate resolution and a course of action - there is nothing worse than the not knowing! While they still aren't certain about everything, it really sounds like the latest news is much better than it could have been! Mr. Squash and I, too, feel really good about the outcome for you and continue to send positive "vibes" your way! We're both smiling big for you today!
Cheers!
Hi Kaaren... I m so happy to hear that you got good news... I will still keep you in my prayers that nothing will show up and that the cancer is all gone... I am also happy you do not have to go through the treatments... Some can be bad... Hugs and Prayers :)
Kaaren... so so happy to hear your news... It will be a roller coaster but still.. can't help think that if it was a 'big' cancer they would have found it. When will you have surgery...
Sue
I'm glad you have some idea of where you stand at this point. I'll continue to keep you in my prayers thru this surgery and the upcoming PET scans.
So so happy to hear that you are on a path with a destination. Sending healing hugs and thoughts.
It's so good to hear you have news and a path to follow now, nothing worse than waiting. Good luck xxBRenda
I know this is not the best news but this has some good news.
I am happy for you that no chemo or radiation.
How long before the surgery? Hope it is soon to get it over with.
My hubby has renal cell carcinoma. this diagnosis does not get clean bill of health but after surgery we have had 6 yrs of good life and many scans.
Wishing you many years of scans and clean results.
You're in my thoughts and prayers, Kaaren. My former boss, an attorney who is also a brigadier general in the U.S. Army Reserves, would often say in a cheery tone, "Life is good!" I loved hearing him say that. You are very right that life is good! I anticipate reading positive reports from you very soon. Take care.
--Anne
Well I'm counting your latest update a blessing...Maybe this cancer thing will be removed and that will be all there is to it. Last time I checked-- God was still in the miracle business;)
Hugs to you from Quilters everywhere---
Kaaren,
Sending prayers and good wishes your way. I think your positive attitude and wonderful medical care will bring you through this.
Keeping up with the postive thoughts. I hope that things will eventually turn out very good for you. In the meantime stay as healthy as you can! Looking forward to seeing what you new Friday Freebie will be. You are so creative with those!
~Linnea
A positive attitude is bursting out of you all over. Good to hear! Keep 'em puzzled, it's good for them. I love sunflowers and September both!
I am so pleased you have finally got some answers and have a plan to follow. Congratulations to you on your wonderful positive attitude and my love and thoughts will be with you when you have the surgery.
Glad you had a good time with your brother and pleased to hear all the children played well with each other.
Hi Kaaren, I realise your journey isn't yet over, but fingers crossed it continues to improve with the continual checks, and more family get-togethers in the future. Best wishes and happy crafting, Jenny
Just wanted you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers and have been for quite some time. 'The Painted Quilt' is one of my favorite blogs that I read (honestly here - love the 'FFF's!) and your writings of your house hunting, your move, the renovations and your gifts of sewing and design are so special! Even tho your 'news' was bad/good, it could have been so much worse. Sending a hug because life is indeed good!
Barbara in TN
You are one amazing trooper Kaaren! I love your 'get over with it and move on' attitude. Hope the surgery goes super well and the recovery path super short!
Good news is always the best news Kaaren and I'm so glad for you...
