The Reveal–Part 2

Things are slowing down a little at the Painted Quilt household now that the first stage of the renovations is over.  I still haven’t unpacked any more boxes but did hang a few pictures and managed to find new homes for some of the things that were piled on our dining room table.

I’m somewhat hesitant to hang more ‘things’ until we’re certain that the furniture is going to remain where it is…for now.  Mr. PQ says that I’m always changing things around anyway so that really shouldn’t be a concern…and do you know what?  He’s right!    *wink*

Although he has a few things left to unpack and to find places for, Mr. PQ’s office is finished.  He is an avid reader and has a huge collection of books. Jody, our contractor, custom built this unit and it houses everything perfectly.  The two cabinets on the right are still empty!

SAM_1197

Travelling in a clockwise direction around the room is another bookcase and a cart to hold miscellaneous items..

SAM_1198

Here’s his computer station…

SAM_1199

And the other window which overlooks the back yard.

SAM_1200

Next is our bedroom which is pretty sparse at the moment.  I haven’t hung any of the pictures or decorative items as you can see.  Unfortunately in this picture you can’t see the new Scottish lace curtains on the windows.  They are going to look even prettier once we can open the windows which will allow the breezes coming in off the ocean to blow them across the room.

SAM_1202

Next to the bed is the dresser which also acts as a bedside table.

SAM_1203

Because of the slope of the ceiling on the opposite wall as well as the addition of the new closet we had built, this is the best place in the bedroom to accommodate the dresser.  The ugly light fixture will eventually be replaced with a ceiling fan.

SAM_1204

Our bedroom is in the ‘new’ addition which was added to the house in 1917.  This next photo shows the original roof line which was incorporated into the construction of both this room and Mr. PQ’s office.  It is actually quite charming and certainly adds to the character of the house but does hinder the placement of furniture in that part of the room.

SAM_1205

This next photo shows my new walk-in closet.  It is my best guess that this room was once a tiny bedroom back in the 1830’s, considering there is a full sized window in it.

SAM_1206

We also had lift-top cupboards/seats built in under the sloped roof line which have come in very handy for additional storage.

SAM_1207

The size of the room is 8’ x 10’ so you can see that I have waaaay too many clothes.

SAM_1208

Next are a couple of ‘updated’ photos of my studio showing the curtains that I hung on both the window…

SAM_1210

And the door to the new closet.  I chose not to have a door installed because the curtain provides easier access to my fabric and wool stash which is neatly stacked in clear bins behind the curtains.

SAM_1211

This next photo shows the location of the closet which is on the wall to the right as you enter the room.

SAM_1212

And the final picture for today shows the stair treads that we had to install because Mac, our Westie, was having an awful time trying to manoeuver the stairs since we removed the carpeting.  He was okay coming down the stairs without the carpeting but because he had nothing to grip onto when ascending, he slid down a couple of times which frightened both him and us.  Everything is now back to ‘normal’ and there hasn’t been an incident since these were added.

SAM_1213

We’ve had some glorious weather over the last little while.  All the snow has melted and yesterday I saw several robins in our back yard.  We also heard the sounds from and then saw a pair of pheasants sneaking under an evergreen tree to nest in our back yard as well.  Although it is overcast and gloomy at the moment with rain in the forecast, I think that spring has indeed arrived in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia.

Everything is so fresh and pretty. One day I hope to have an entire wall of built-in bookcases with a moving ladder. I'm sure Mac is very happy not to skittle all over the bare stairs now. Have a wonderful weekend.

Hi Kaaren,

Everything looks lovely. I envy you those big closets and the stair treads certainly are a great idea.
Spring is slowly coming to our area too. My husband saw robins on Wednesday and today we have lots of snow drops out and other spring bulbs sprouting. We still have lots of snow in our little woods and on our front lawn, but the rest of our property shows lots of grass, not green yet though.

Thanks for all the pictures. Always look forward to seeing what you are up to.Have a good weekend.

I think you are having lots of fun decorating. The sloped ceilings certainly add charm but can pose a problem with furniture placement. I see that often on HGTV. I am a big fan of the different shows on that channel.

Beautiful. I love it. I am jealous...lol. I love older houses and yours has soooooo much character. You have done a fantastic job.

We are going to start a remodel this summer to make things more handicap friendly for my hubby. I dread the mess.

Thanks for sharing!

How wonderful Kaaren for you both to have made a beautiful home here in Nova Scotia. A lot of work for you two. Doing it together was great I bet you. It is nice doing things with our hubbies eh? Yes it is nice to see the milder temps also. Enjoy your week end. Blessings: Dianne.

Thanks for sharing the pictures - you are coming along in getting your home the way you want it - the braided treads are so very pretty.
Avonport Discount Centre has long been a favourite of mine and the gals who run it are warm, friendly and go out of their way to help out. Glenice is a neighbour of mine - in the country that means she lives the next couple of roads over - about 10 miles more or less, but has often brought along to me a much needed item and dropped it off on her way home from work. And in case you didn't notice - there is a seperate shop across the parking lot where Gail's husband sells tires and other toys for boys. Gail also features candy and the Briggs yarn so valued for hooking rugs - can't lose on this shop!!!
The antique store is a treasure too isn't it?
BTW I would put your beautiful vintage quilt flat on the ground rather than risk breaking stitches by hanging it over the line. It only takes a minute for the wind to come up, often when the tide turns, and then damage could be done.
Thanks for sharing your renovation adventures.

Your home is simply beautiful. Your closet and ceiling slopes remind me of grandma's way back when I was a kid. There was a smallish sort of room that I always wondered what the intent was for.
Thanks for helping your little Mac on those stairs...that could have been awfully scary for the booger.

You guys have really done a wonderful job on your home. I love the additional features of the sloped ceilings in the bedroom and I can picture those curtains blowing with the breeze.

I am glad that spring is in the air for you. What a thrill!!!

Everything is coming together so nicely, Kaaren. I do love the addition of the rugs on the stair treads. They really fit the character of the old house.

My gosh - what a gorgeous home. I love the curtains you made. The stair treads are just perfect! Wow girl you are doing wonderfully!

Just lovely, Kaaren. I am enjoying your home thru your pictures.
Glad to hear Mac isn't sliding down the stairs anymore. And I think the tread runners (which are fabulous!) will be a good thing for both you and Mr. PQ as well. Living in an older home myself, I know just how easy it is to make a misstep on steep stairs.
Enjoy the advancing spring time weather. It does our hearts good- don't you think!

Congratulations on the wonderful progress that you both have made. Your personal touch is becoming more prominent. With the warmer weather coming you will move your activities outside soon.

Kaaren, I'm so happy that you are finally settling in. And poor Mac I know how hard it is for the little guys to maneouver the stairs. Our fergus had a hard time on our stairs as well. Love your choice of stair runners. Can't wait for spring. This has been one long winter.

It is all coming together so nicely!
We have contemplated the stair treads. How did you install them?

Loving what you've done so far and the stair treads are perfect!

Wow....you certainly have earned a break from working. Everything is lovely and well thought out. Given it's place off the bedroom, is it possible that your closet may have been a birthing room/nursery once upon a time? We had an antique house once that had a similar room for that purpose.

I couldn't help notice the gorgeous GFG quilt on the bed and wondering if you made it? I'm working on a GFG quilt, it's my forever project. Your house is so charming with everything organized and in it's place. I bet it feels good to have the construction finished.

Although it's a lot of work, starting from scratch in placing furniture and pictures is great for looking at things in a new way. I've been known to have pictures sitting along my baseboards for a year or more before I've hung them on the wall. I can appreciate your sloping ceilings after just having spent a week at a B&B in Key West in their attic suite. They asked us our height before letting us book the room because of the sloping ceilings. It was fun. Best wishes in your new home. Kathie L in Allentown

Gosh, Kaaren -- it's remarkable what you've done in the short time you've been in your new home! Beautiful work - it looks so cozy and bright! We had the same problem with Sophie on our hardwoods - she would inadvertantly break dance all over! I'm sure Mac is ever so grateful for the help!
Cheers!

Kaaren, I keep coming back to this picture of the Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt. I am making one and this one has been a huge inspiration to me. Can I just come move in this room? I have visited this particular picture so often I feel like I already live here ;0)
