My love affair with antique quilts goes back more than 20 years. I recall when I bought my very first one for $35 at a country auction near Cambridge, Ontario back in the early 80’s. At last count, I believe I have 22 or 23 that I’ve given an interim home til they’re passed on to someone else after I’m gone.
Currently, I’m busy working on swap gifts so I can’t reveal too much. Instead, I’ve decided to show you one of my favorite red and white antique quilts.
It’s in wonderful condition and the red fabric does not show any signs of wear which is very unusual given it’s age.
The quilting is quite detailed and the stitching ever so tiny.
I ‘m not familiar with nor do I know the name of the pattern.
Happy stitching!
Kaaren
I'm always so happy when an old quilt has a home, instead of being stuffed in a box, unloved. Those beauties deserve to be seen.
ReplyDeleteSince it is an antique, it may be a biblical block. I did want to say Crown of Thorns or Devil's Claw but it looks more like a variation of Crown of Thorns. I will see if some of my old books have the pattern.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a pretty two color quilt. Perfect for decorating during holidays too!

ReplyDeleteKaaren,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing photos of your beautiful antique quilt. I hope to get you some help with identifying the name of the block. I've scheduled a post for later today that links to your blog from http://quilting.craftgossip.com

Ohh..two colour quilts are so fresh ..and yours is wonderful...:o)
ReplyDeleteWe love antique quilts too. We have acquired 3 of them so far, and they are in pretty good shape. Plus I have one that was passed down from my dh aunt. It is not in great condition, but it is sentimental. Do you sometimes wonder what these old quilts have seen??

$35 dollars for a quilt , today hundreds!! The quilt is beautiful, I have no idea what the block is but it is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI've never seen that design before. I love it. It is so incredible how 2 colors and 2 fabrics can make up something so classic, simple but incredibly beautiful. Love the quilt. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWhat an heirloom! I've never seen the pattern before, either. But I do love two-color quilts even though I haven't made one yet. I'm also amazed at how the red fabric is so vibrant. It must have been well-cared for even before you acquired it!
ReplyDeleteI have never seen this pattern before. Its amazing how something so simple can be so strikingly lovely. What a treasure. It has a good home.
ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty quilt, I love old quilts. Nice to see it in a warm and caring home.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful red and white quilt! The red looks so vibrant too, not washed out and faded like alot of antique red quilts. Hope you have good luck finding the name of the block.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to have such a nice collection of quilts. I have a friend who used to collect red and white ones but mostly had small ones. This pattern is fascinating!
ReplyDeleteI love red and white quilts. Just wish they weren't so boring to work on. I made one for DD for a wedding gift and kept saying "made with love, made with love" as I fed those pieces thru the machine. LOL Great quilt you have there.
ReplyDeleteIts beautiful, Kaaren! I wonder if its an Amish design - somewhere in the back of my mind I remember they make a lot of two-color quilts!
ReplyDeleteCheers!
I have used this pattern in the past and am currently hand quilting a wallhanging; I know it by the name "Hands All Around"! Love the red and white. My current project is done with batiks and muslin.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day.
Sorry for the second post. I have added a photo of my current Hands All Around project to my blog, if you want to stop by and see it. Apologies for the photo quality, took it in poor light with my cell phone.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day.
Your red and white quilt is stunning. Sorry I can't help with the name.
ReplyDeleteWow -- that is a gorgeous quilt! I wish I knew the name of the block -- it really is fabulous.
ReplyDeleteYour antique quilt is beautiful and love your dresden plate quilt!
ReplyDeleteThis two colour quilt (BTW they were popular in the period around 1910 as a reaction from ornate edwardian and victorian rooms) looks to be related to the Turkey Track block. Hope that helps a little.
