1800 mile puppy quest–part 2

Saturday morning dawned bright and sunny…and so were our spirits.  Just a couple of hours more and we would have our new puppy.  We were like two children at Christmas and the wait was killing us.

We went for a leisurely breakfast then stopped at a pet shop to pick up a crate for the new addition to our family.  We had given Mac’s crate away many years ago, never thinking that we might possibly need it again.

I don’t know how many times we looked at our watches but the time seemed to be standing still.  We decided to take a slow drive to the address where we were to pick up the puppy.

red stars divider

We arrived at 11am, an hour early.

The first words out of Mr. Painted Quilt’s mouth were, “I don’t like the looks of this” and if the truth be known, neither did I.  The house was kinda shabby looking but being the eternal optimist that I am replied, “Let’s not judge this book by it’s cover”.

Mr. PQ is a retired police officer and he immediately knew that something was amiss.

It took three knocks before the ‘gentleman’ of the house came to the door.  He was dressed in baggy pants…you know the kind that hangs halfway down the butt…no shirt and a woollen tuque pulled down over his ears.  His words of greeting to us were, “We were expecting you a little later”.

If you’ve read this far then you have probably guessed that our 1800 mile quest for a puppy does not have a happy ending.

In short, the puppy that was handed over to us was NOT a pure bred Westie, the mother was NOT on the premises, the vet certificate was NOT real and was obviously forged because there were things crossed out, dates were changed and the veterinary clinic sticker was missing.

Without going into all the sordid details, what we uncovered was a fence for a puppy mill which supposedly are a real problem in Quebec.

red stars divider

We were devastated.

Forget the fact that we had already driven 900 miles to find out that we had been taken and that the $200 deposit that I had e-transferred to them was as good as gone.  Our concern was for the poor little puppy.

As soon as Mr. PQ identified himself as a retired police officer and that our next stop when we left there would be the local police station, they became very belligerent and defensive and started coming out with contradictory stories, different from the ones that were told to me during our two telephone conversations prior to making the trip.

At that point we were going to leave with the puppy when they started to sing a different tune and offered to give us our money back if we would “just forget about it”.  After showering us with insults, they reluctantly returned our money and we left….directly to the police station.

Since returning home, we’ve been told that this operation has been ‘closed down’, the couple has been arrested and they will not be operating from these premises any longer.  The puppy and several kittens were seized and are now being cared for at a local shelter.

red stars divider

I want to say that I am sorry if I led you to believe that our story had a happy ending and that we came home with a new puppy.  That was not my intention.  I just wanted to share with you the fact that it is so easy to be fooled by misguided people who obviously have no conscience.

It was an emotional and expensive lesson but the one thing that Mr. PQ and I have learned is that if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is.  We also learned that unless you know the people personally who are offering “pure bred” dogs for sale, pay a little more and purchase your pet from a registered breeder.

That’s what we are going to do.

I know you are heartbroken, but you did a good thing and probably saved a lot of animals and other people heartbreak!!! Try to look at the good that came from your "adventure".

I am getting a new westie puppy next week, so know how excited you are.

Oh Kaaren, I am so sorry. I am just so glad that the two of you left the house safely to return home. Hopefully you can find another Westie soon.

I feel your disappointment.
And, look forward to a more positive outcome next time out.
YOUR new puppy will be there waggin' tail his while he awaits your arrival.
I'm keeping 'Positive Thoughts' toward this end, Kaaren.

How disappointing for both of you! And for me... no cute puppy pic fix at the end of your post. You must be happy that you got those people shut down and arrested. That is the happy ending to this story.

Major bummer! Puppy mills are horrible and detestable.

I hope your new puppy finds y'all soon 'cause I'm needing some cute puppy pictures stat...wink.

I am so sorry for your experience. That is a long trip to,end in such a disappointment. We had a similar experience. puppies for sale, "pure bred" The lady said she would meet us halfway in between our home and theirs. We saw the dogs and they were obviously not pure bred, but we went ahead and took the agreed upon dog. Who had diarrhea constantly until we took him to the vet and spent big $. So we decided to go and see where the puppies came from, and saw the most disgusting, horrible cramped cages, and all those babies living in filth. I know you will find a darling baby that you can love...and I am glad that place is now closed down!

Oh my gosh!!! I am so sorry this happened to you! I was on pins and needles waiting for today's post to see a picture of your new puppy and I am shocked to say the least! I can't believe people! You must be heartbroken. But THANK GOODNESS you called the police and got the puppies and kittens taken out of that situation - I pray that they find a good home and that these rotten people will have to be accountable. I look forward to you guys finding a Westie soon that will become a wonderful part of your family. You and your husband deserve a gold star for turning those awful people in to the police!!!

Kaaren I am sorry to read you did not get the puppy you wished for but pleased you help put those people out of their dodgie business.
After we lost our beloved pet it took 18mths before we finally got our new baby from a proper breeder. Lacy is well worth the wait as your new puppy will be too.

Phyllis said...

So sorry that this happened but good to know that the "puppy mill" is closed. So many bad people in this world. There is a sweet little Westie waiting for you. Best wishes.

So sorry to hear of your experience. It is hard to realize there are people like them. Good that your husband was there and able to do the right thing. You saved some precious animals. Good luck in your search for your puppy. Not all people are bad, thank heaven!

I'm so sorry that it turned out this way. The great news is that because of you more people will not be duped by these people and the animals they had will be cared for. It was a sad and hard lesson, but good did come of it and for that I am thankful. Thank you for having the courage to share the story. I applaud you and your DH!

what a disappointment. I hadn't read the first entry about it (I'm sorry but reading in another language takes more time, so I can't read it all). Any good that has come from it is that the puppys and kittens were removed from that house later.

Oooh, I know that you were ready for another dog in your lives. We just got one after losing our dog last year.
But your story of facing these people and helping to shut them down is remarkable. Think of all the animals and people you've saved from their neglect and scam. Like superheros traveling across the country bringing justice to people and animals alike!!

Hi Kaaren,

So sorry to hear about your experience.
It is sad to know that so many illegal puppy mills exsist.
We appreciate your story and hope you will be able to find a breeder on your next search.
We were lucky with our "Honey". We found her at a rescue home where we received all her history and a note from the previous owners about her and all her likes and dislikes. That was over six years ago and we have all settled in to be a happy family and have even adopted a kitten who joined our family three years ago.
So take heart and all the best on our search.

Oh dear. Sorry for your heartache but super sorry for animals in puppy mills. It's a sordid operation and very prevalent in Ohio's Amish communities as well.

WOW - didn't see that one coming - I am as humble as you and Mr. PQ are :( What an ordeal - expensive and heartbreaking. What came to me though at the end of the story was that a puppy somewhere is being born and you went through this difficult ordeal to wait for him/her. It will make this new pup even more special - I'm thinking of all the turmoil we went through when we adopted our children. Not that children are equal to pups, but the heartbreak and emotional roller coaster rides can be the same. Hang in there Kaaren - the best is yet to come!!

Your story broke my heart. Tears don't express all that I am feeling right now. I just don't understand how people can be so cruel. Claddaughquilting said...

Oh how awful! You must be so disappointed, but you did the right thing. I have a lovely 5 year old Westie that I got from a reputable breeder in Quebec, not far from Montreal. Her dogs are all on site and treated like members of the family. My dog has a wonderful personality, and I would be happy to give you her name. In addition, we adopted a rescue dog just last weekend, a westie mix. Not sure exactly what she is, maybe a Westie-poo, but she is an angel. It took a few days for my "girls" to get along, but it was well worth it. You will find the right dog for you and Mr. PQ, take your time. So sorry for your horrible experience in Quebec!

It wasn't such a bad ending Kaaren. You guys did a big thing by reporting them and the rescued animals will be better off. Hopefully they will think not start up again elsewhere. These sort of people are disgusting.

So sorry to read the sad ending to your story. When i got my last dog, a Pomeranian, I truly felt I was paying to rescue a dog. She was a purebred dog and the mother was on the premises but the conditions were awful. She had fleas, ear mites and a tapeworm all discovered by my vet, but she turned out to be a beautiful delightful dog. I almost didn't take her but somehow we bonded and she remains my favorite dog ever!

I'm was very sorry to hear how your trip turned out, but one shining light in all of this is that your trip uncovered and shut down a pit of agony for animals bred in such horrendous conditions. It may have been 900miles, but every mile worth it because of what you found and had the guts to follow this through and report it to the authorities. It was disappointing for you, but maybe it had to take the two of you to do this, the universe works in very mysterious ways Kaaren, at least you had a hand in stopping some of the suffering out there.
Your new little puppy is still waiting for you to discover it, I hope you all don't have to wait too long to be together!!!!

I am not going to lie, I was really looking forward to the puppy picture at the end of the story and was sorely disappointed it wasn't there. BUT, you had me glued to every word and I am now referring to it as the PQ Puppy Quest. I hope the story eventually ends with a cute bundle of fur for you. In the meantime, I have to chuckle at the bad guys getting caught by the retired police officer and am very happy the animals have been removed from the premises.

what an awful heartbreak for you. Our first westie was from such a situation, unfortunately the 'seller' also had a ligit business and we were naive, my gut was giving me doubts but we went ahead anyway. Chloe was a purebred westie, but a sick one and one week after we got her (and had fallen in love) she went into seizures on the kitchen floor and died while I was on the phone with the veterinarian. We luckily got our $ back (my husband and his partner showed up in uniform. We found a breeder a few months later. She did have the parents on premises and flat out ordered us to take our new puppy to our vets and have a thorough exam and only after hearing from us that all was ok would she cash our check.
Tough lessons learned. I wish you good luck in finding a good breeder. Once you have a Westie it's difficult to go without one!

Thank you for going to the police and thanks for posting this story. The internet is full of animals for sale and most of them are less than reputable.

I'm so sorry you had to go through that. In the states we have breed specific rescue groups, so that if you want a specific breed sometimes that can be a great way to find a new family member. Of course, they rarely get puppies. My latest pug came from SE Pug Rescue, she was 9.5 when we got her and I wasn't sure about an older dog after losing my 11 year old pug to pneumonia. But she stole my heart and has fit our family perfectly. Good luck in finding your new family member whether you find a reputable breeder or a rescue group, I know you'll find the right little westie for you.
